If your vehicle is included on the list above, it’s time to take some extra preventive measure, particularly these coming months, July and August, which, the NHTSA says, are the top two months when the most number of vehicles are stolen.
Here are tips from NHTSA to prevent car theft:
1. Don’t leave the key in the ignition
This is a basic: don’t be forgetful. Always bring the car key with you every time you get out of the car, just like how you almost automatically put your cellphone and wallet in your pocket. But don’t just absentmindedly put your car key in your pocket, always take a mental note that you have it in your hand before inserting it in your pouch.
2. Lock the doors and windows
This is so simple, yet some drivers ignore this precaution. Upon parking, make it a habit to roll up the windows and double-check if the car door is locked. Just a small opening is what the thief needs, so don’t give them a chance to steal your vehicle.
3. Park in a safer place
Thieves prefer stealing car in a dark street. If you don’t have a garage, try renting one if possible. It’s an expensive option but think of it as an investment for your car’s safety. Make sure that the garage is well-lit and better if there’s security camera mounted somewhere.
4. Don’t leave your valuables in plain sight

Never leave important items inside your car especially in plain view. If you must, hide it in the compartment or in the trunk. If you leave inside the car your laptop, cell phone, or other valuables, it’s like you’re inviting criminals.
