According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), these are the top stolen vehicles in 2014:

  1. Honda Accord
  2. Honda Civic
  3. General Motors Silverado
  4. Toyota Camry
  5. Ford F150
  6. Ford Econoline
  7. Ford 250
  8. Nissan Altima
  9. Toyota Corolla
  10. General Motors GMT

If your vehicle is included on the list above, it’s time to take some extra preventive measure, particularly these coming months, July and August, which, the NHTSA says, are the top two months when the most number of vehicles are stolen.

Here are tips from NHTSA to prevent car theft:

1. Don’t leave the key in the ignition

This is a basic: don’t be forgetful. Always bring the car key with you every time you get out of the car, just like how you almost automatically put your cellphone and wallet in your pocket. But don’t just absentmindedly put your car key in your pocket, always take a mental note that you have it in your hand before inserting it in your pouch.

2. Lock the doors and windows

This is so simple, yet some drivers ignore this precaution. Upon parking, make it a habit to roll up the windows and double-check if the car door is locked. Just a small opening is what the thief needs, so don’t give them a chance to steal your vehicle.

3. Park in a safer place

Thieves prefer stealing car in a dark street. If you don’t have a garage, try renting one if possible. It’s an expensive option but think of it as an investment for your car’s safety. Make sure that the garage is well-lit and better if there’s security camera mounted somewhere.

4. Don’t leave your valuables in plain sight

Never leave important items inside your car especially in plain view. If you must, hide it in the compartment or in the trunk. If you leave inside the car your laptop, cell phone, or other valuables, it’s like you’re inviting criminals.

5. Consider equipping your vehicle with GPS tracking device

GPS tracking device such as Trackimo allows user to monitor their car 24/7. You can view its movements using your smartphone or browser. In case it gets stolen, you will be able to locate its position and recover it quickly. You can also set up the device to send alert to the police authorities in the event your vehicle is stolen. The tracking app also allows you to create virtual fence around your car so that if it moves while parked, you will receive and alert. This tracking device can help the car owner recover stolen vehicle.

Of all the vehicles reported missing, 45 percent are never found. Don’t let your car be added to this statistics. Secure your car with the simple tips above.
